Why Stern MEB

Why London Clients Choose Stern MEB for Fire Alarms

London's building stock runs from Georgian townhouses to glass-clad office blocks, and fire alarm requirements shift accordingly. We've spent two decades working across the capital's postcodes, we know the regs, the building types, and how to get kit installed without tearing half the ceiling down.

NICEIC-Approved & Fully Accredited

We're NICEIC-approved, TrustMark-registered and CHAS-accredited. Every installation meets BS 5839 and comes with full certification for Building Control, insurers and lease compliance.

Fixed-Price Quotes, Free Site Surveys

We visit, we measure, we quote. That price holds. No provisional sums, no 'subject to site conditions'. If the job changes, we tell you before we touch a screwdriver.

Commercial & Residential Experience

We've fitted systems in HMOs, offices, schools, retail units, industrial units and mixed-use developments. Different occupancies need different categories, we spec accordingly and document everything.

Ongoing Maintenance & Testing

Fire alarms aren't fit-and-forget. We offer planned maintenance contracts with quarterly, six-monthly or annual testing schedules, plus emergency callouts when a panel faults at 3 a.m.

Where we work

London and the surrounding area

Based in Woodford Green (IG8), we cover the whole of Greater London, from the City and Docklands out to Bromley, Croydon, Enfield and Harrow. Most jobs are within an hour's drive of our workshop, so call-outs are quick and van stock is always close.

We handle multi-site contracts, cover all London postcodes and work across Essex borders when projects span both counties.

Common questions

London FAQs

Do I need planning permission or Building Control approval for a new fire alarm in London?+
You don't need planning permission, but Building Control notification is required for new installations or upgrades that affect means of escape. We handle the paperwork, issue the certificates and liaise with your local authority or Approved Inspector. If it's an HMO or licensed premises, your licensing officer will want to see compliance certificates too.
What's the difference between L1, L2 and L5 fire alarm categories?+
L1 covers the whole building (every room, corridor, stairwell). L2 covers escape routes plus defined areas of high risk. L5 is a basic system covering escape routes only. The category you need depends on building use, occupancy and whether it's new-build or refurb. We assess during the site survey and recommend the appropriate category.
How long does a typical fire alarm installation take in a London commercial unit?+
A small office or retail unit with a single-zone conventional panel usually takes one to two days. Larger premises with addressable loops, multiple floors or complex zoning can run three to five days. We schedule around your trading hours and can work evenings or weekends to minimise disruption.
Can you service or upgrade an existing fire alarm system installed by another contractor?+
Yes. We take on maintenance contracts for systems we didn't install, provided the original installation meets current standards. If the panel's obsolete or spares are unavailable, we'll advise on a phased upgrade or full replacement with a modern addressable system.
